Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a disease of the reproductive system in women. The lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows outside of the uterus. Despite not being inside of the uterus, the tissue bleeds and breaks down with every menstrual cycle. Because it’s not in the uterus, there is nowhere for the tissue to leave the body and so it continues to flare, bleed, and grow.
Endometriosis can grow anywhere in the body, but mostly grows on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowels, bladder, intestines, and uterus. Though it’s more commonly found in the pelvic area, there have actually been 3 cases where endometrium cells have been found growing in the brain. This constant irritation of the tissues eventually leads to adhesions and scar tissue that can cause the organs to stick together, which is extremely painful.
Symptoms include:
Sharp pain Painful Bowel Movements
Bloating Pain During Intercourse
Ovarian Cysts Low Back Pain
Heavy Bleeding Extremely Painful Periods
Painful Ovulation
Infertility
Endometriosis is also linked to other disorders such as adenomyosis, PCOS, interstitial cystitis, and auto immune diseases.
Treatment
Treatments in western medicine usually consists of hormone therapy through birth control and forced early menopause to stop the growth of the endometrium. Surgery is required to officially diagnose endometriosis. Adhesions and endometrium are extracted laparoscopically but it’s very common for endometriosis to grow back. Many patients require surgery multiple times until menopause begins. In extreme cases a hysterectomy is required after all other treatments have been exhausted. Because the endometrium can grow anywhere in the body, a hysterectomy isn’t always a “cure” and frequently reoccurs.
Eastern Medicine
Chinese medicine believes that endometriosis is caused by blood stagnation and liver Qi stagnation. Acupuncture and herbs can be used to break up stagnation, increase blood flow, and help to balance the hormones.

Endometriosis can benefit from other forms of “treatment” such as a balanced diet, exercise, managing stress properly, and making sure the body is getting proper rest, especially during flares and menstrual cycles.
